Description of Learning Type CE Event: We are facing a crisis. Behavior analysis as we know it is on the edge of being targeted by “cancel culture” and the number of critics voicing their concerns about our work is growing by the day. We owe it to ourselves, our clients, those who have come before us and paved the way in our field, and those who will (hopefully) come after us, to open ourselves up to criticism and to take stock of where we are, where we’ve come from, and where we hope to grow as a field. I believe that the crux of our current dilemma is that we are becoming a field of practitioners who know how to “do ABA” instead of a field of thoughtful scientists who take time to understand and analyze individual behavior. Our science has evolved to become much more humane, ethical, and dignifying… but our practice continues to lag behind. Many clinicians are still relying heavily upon behavior modification practices, popular in the early days of our applied science, and have not yet fully adopted function-based assessment and treatment. To understand how to combat the growing criticism of our field, we need to understand the evolution of our science and educate ourselves about the sometimes dark past of our field. It is a critical time for all behavior analysts to ensure that their practice is evolving with our science and with the environment around us, and to ensure that we are truly being behavior analysts who understand our own science and philosophy.
